Project Engineer

 

Position Overview:

The role will be the direct contact for the Programme Managers, ensuring that any engineering changes are managed through the wider team and taking responsibility for coordinating the engineering aspects of customer NPI’s within the business. This is a critical job as the Project Engineer has to be very attentive and conscientious while carrying out the onboarding of the new product stream. Existing product subject to customer revision or changes are also a key focus for the role, with the execution of change control & liaison with all parties to ensure the product is available for manufacturing by the committed date. The role is a key contributor in both internal & external stakeholder meetings, acting as a funnel to the wider Engineering team.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • To ensure any engineering changes are managed & tracked across the teams effectively.
  • Take the engineering lead on projects for customers, ensuring necessary project plans are in place, correct operating rhythm and procedures are followed and any first-off’s are well managed and signed off.
  • Attends customer meetings as required, but also pulls on the wider Engineering resources & core functions (as required) to facilitate excellent customer experience.
  • Takes the technical lead at the front end of the process, ensuring all necessary requirements are captured and detailed well in advance of any customer NPI/build.
  • Promotes opportunities for LEAN processes & commercial interaction to drive higher margins, by identifying risks & capturing detailed costs for the bid team i.e., NRE & tooling.
  • Reports on progress and escalations within Engineering & wider cross functional team as required.
  • Identifying the company standards and customer specifications and verifying for their presence in the product
  • Working with the wider team -verifying the design or blueprint of the product before manufacturing starts
  • Working with the wider team - verifying the product itself after the manufacturing has been completed.
  • Quoting overhead and expenses in document format
  • Liaising with the Bids team on cost submissions & collation of detail
  • Liaising with other departments across the business and ensuring that team members and engineers complete work within deadline
  • Tutoring junior employees on the pros and cons of the product launch
  • Providing feedback about the product and suitable recommendations to the Research and Development engineer for development of the product
  • Leadership skill (no direct reports) since the job entails mentoring and leading other engineers working for the project.
  • Completion of Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA)

Qualifications/Skills/Personal Qualities – CORE

  • Excellent communication skill with in-house (staff) as well as outside (customer) members
  • High motivational skill base to take initiative in times of challenge.
  • Learning skill to speedily absorb new methods and techniques of preparation.
  • Computer literacy skill in Microsoft packages and computer use
  • Coordination skill to reconcile the efforts of all technical departments.
  • Demonstrable high level of organisational skills

 

Qualifications/Skills/Personal Qualities – DESIRABLE

  • Relevant manufacturing/engineering qualification preferred
  • Professional accreditation with an industry related body would be advantageous
  • Ability to use CAD would be advantageous
  • Experience of FMEA (Failure Mode Effects Analysis), Kaizen/A3 (continuous improvement and problem solving) process improvement and Poke Yoke (error proofing) techniques
  • Significant work experience in a Low volume/ High change manufacturing environment
  • Experienced with MRP systems
  • Understanding of design and production costs to include waste, downtime, scrap and re-work
