Manufacturing Technician

The role:

The Manufacturing Technician will be responsible for the setup, operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of key production equipment used in PCB assembly and finishing processes.   

Ensure high-quality output, minimal downtime, and adherence to industry and customer standards, assist in continuous monitoring and improvement of processes, implement Poke Yoke (error-proofing) techniques. The role requires hands-on technical expertise, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities:

Setup and Operation

Set up, program, and operate production equipment in line with work instructions and process specifications.

You will be responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of the following equipment:

  • Wave Solder Machines (Sun East Peak-400H) – setup of solder pots, flux systems, conveyor speeds, and thermal profiles. 
  • Selective Soldering Machines (Ersa Dual head) – programming and optimisation for through-hole and mixed technology assemblies. 
  • Axial Component Insertion Machines (Universal VCD/Sequencer 8) – setup, loading, and alignment for automated component placement. 
  • Odd-form Machines (New purchase) – preparation and forming of electronic components to required specifications. 
  • Laser Depaneling Systems and stacker (Bespoke machine) – precision separation of PCBs while maintaining board integrity. 
  • Automated Conformal Coating Machines (IEM AT-500) – programming, setup, and control of coating processes to ensure correct coverage and protection.
  • Ensure all machinery is running efficiently and producing to required quality standards.
  • Perform routine maintenance, fault finding, and minor repairs to minimise downtime.
  • Support new product introduction (NPI) activities, including process setup and validation.
  • Monitor production performance and adjust optimise throughput and yield.
  • Conduct first-off inspections and in-process quality checks.
  • Maintain accurate production, maintenance, and quality records.
  • Work closely with Engineering and Quality teams to resolve process issues.
  • Ensure compliance with ESD, IPC standards, and health & safety regulations.

Continuous Monitoring and Improvement

  • Monitor manufacturing processes to identify areas for improvement.
  • Collect and analyse production data to identify trends, bottlenecks, and areas of waste.
  • Assist in developing and implementing improvement initiatives using lean manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective actions for production issues.
  • Work with the Quality Assurance team to ensure processes meet quality standards and drive improvements.

Qualifications and experience:

Skills

  • Proven experience in an electronics manufacturing or PCB assembly environment. 
  • Hands-on experience with wave solder and/or selective soldering processes. 
  • Strong understanding of electronic components and PCB assembly techniques. 
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, BOMs, and work instructions. 
  • Experience with machine setup, changeovers, and process optimisation. 
  • Proven fault-finding and problem-solving skills (mechanical and process-related). 
  • Familiarity with IPC standards (e.g., IPC-A-610) and ESD controls.

Qualifications

  • NVQ / BTEC / HNC in Electronics, Manufacturing, or Engineering. 
  • IPC certification (e.g., IPC-A-610, J-STD-001). 
  • Experience working within a Contract Electronics Manufacturer (CEM). 

Technical Skills

  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, equipment, and technologies.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles, continuous improvement and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., IPC, ISO13485 and IATF16494).
